representation

protagonist group
The three characters. we do not learn their names or much about the characters themselves. however, the film represents the characters personality through the vivid colours that they are wearing, and through good light, which can be seen to break the stereotype of minorities as minorities are usually portrayed in a negative and violent light in the media. However, in this film, they are presented to have a deep and touching conversation about race, which is not shown enough through the media. By using an all black protagonist cast and allowing them to use their voice to express their views on topics like race and culture, gives an important representation and message to black people and other minority groups who have been suppressed about voicing their perspective and problems. By giving representation to minorities, who have yet to have a large platform and portrayal in the film industry and the media, reflects how important representation is and how  the repetitive cycle of shutting out diversity and disregarding misrepresentation can cause negative stereotypes. Resulting in inequality of power.

Tyron
we are presented  with him him at the start, where the three protagonist mention him, but we are presented with him visually near the end. we, as audience learn the most about his character compared to any other in the film, as we learn that the group have been waiting for him for at least half an hour, as they do not want to walk home, and that he is with a girl name Charlene. He is represented as  he is tied up in something important, which is reflected through his costume of being half dressed and holding his necktie

side characters

The two side characters that appeared in the film. the first guy with the tight jeans is the base of the film and how the main conversation between the protagonist evolved. The guy in the tight jeans is represented as 'emo" due to his clothing choice. the guy on the right, appears at the end of the film, his tight t-shirt had a similar effect on the protagonist  like the guy in the tight jeans.

sound

The film starts with an upbeat soundtrack, which reflects the pace of the film, and the energy of the protagonist. The main sound is the dialogue between the main characters, the dialogue is  fast paced and filled with energy and  frustration, which reflects the irritation that the characters are experiencing from waiting. Silence is used to contrast the chaotic conversation, while the guy wearing tight jeans walk past. This highlights the importance of guy walking past as his clothing becomes a topic of interest.

performance

The performance of the two characters wearing red and orange are very in your face and high energy compared to the character wearing blue, as his performance was more calm. Their characters matched the colours of their clothing.

Editing

The film starts with a montage of cut away and fast paced videos of the market to reflect the sense of normality, and also to reflect the passage of time. The cut away of the protagonist group hands and shoes and the wide shots of the park are also to reflect the passage of time. The first conversation that we hear from the protagonist group is a long shot with not cuts, this makes the audience concentrate on their conversation, but it also mirrors their frustration from waiting. Continuity editing is also used such as eye line match, for example the scene where the guy wearing skinny jeans walk by. Throughout their conversations in the film, the scenes are always long shot with no  cuts, this highlights the importance of dialogue in the film and makes the film feel more raw and representative

Cinematography

The film starts with an establishing shot of the market, reflecting the energic energy, but also giving a sense of everyday normality to the film. cutaway shot shows a close up shot of a park,  which also gives a sense of normality to the film. close up shot of the three protagonist hands which reflect their importance  and aligns them to the audience. a slow pane shot of the protagonist shoes, which can mirror the importance of clothing, as it is a base topic that runs through out the film. another cut away close up shot of the protagonist hands, which shows the characters fiddling with their hands, this can represent their frustration and boredom from waiting.
The wide dolly shot from behind the characters allows the audience to observe  the setting and also shows that they are waiting. Through out their conversation, the cameras motion moves slowly from   left to right creating movement. Which can be used metaphorically how the producer wants the audience to be actively thinking along with the characters.
A slow pan is used alongside silence to create a highlight and make the audience pay close attention to as a guy walks past wearing tight jeans. An eye line match, tracking and close up is used to contribute the importance the tight jeans has to the narrative of the plot

Mise en scene

costume

the protagonist group

The three men are seen wearing casual clothing, which reflects how they are represented as ordinary characters. However, the bright colours of their hoodies can be used to mirror their bright and through the screen characters and energy.  The colours of their hoodie can also metaphorically represent the induvial character as well, for example, the man to the left is wearing a bright red hoodie, which can mirror him as a low patience and out going character, which is seen when he gets frustrated of having to wait, and how he starts the conversation about the tight jeans. The middle man is wearing a orange and grey hoodie, the grey helps balance the colours as he is sitting in the middle, and the orange also reflects his energetic personality. The man on the right is wearing a bright blue hoodie, this is a cool tone colour which contrast with the other people's clothing, but it could also represent his differentiated opinion compared to the other two as he does not find white women attractive. The  cool tone colour could also represent him as the calmer character out of all of them.

The choice of clothing for the main three characters (hoodies and baggy jeans) contrast the "tight jeans" and "tight t shirt' that the two extra characters were wearing. This can be used to link with the race topic and reflect the contrast.

Narrative

3 Act structure
The Climax of ACT 1 is when the protagonist group spot the man in skinny jeans. This small incident leads to a wide and deep topic about race.
The mid point or the big twist in this narrative is the point in the conversation where the character in the orange jumper mentions why black people were slaves. This is indicated by zoom in  to each of the characters faces which reflects the realisation that they just had.
The climax of Act 2 is when Tyron comes out and ask them to stay for 5 more minutes. which leads to the descending action of when they have to wait for longer because they don't want to walk home.
The wrap up is when the guy with the tight white t shirt walks in to the screen, catching their attention and resulting in a similar reaction they had towards the guy wearing the tight jeans. The resolution is when the character in the orange hoodie starts the sentence, a similar way of how he did with the guy wearing the skinny jeans, resulting in the others realising that perhaps not everything that they discussed were true.

Meaning and messages

The way the film used such a simple element (the skinny jeans) and turned it into a wide and deep topic that carried the film .
