sound design
My film will be heavy in voice over, as my Protagonist is acting as a 'story teller'. Her emotions, the sound in her voice will help manipulate the audience to feel what she is feeling and empathize with her.
diegetic sound
Diegetic sound is an important element in my film, as the visuals will be heavily stylized. so by hearing what we are seeing, will help intensify the experience and feel more driven with the narrative. The diegetic sounds will include sounds of her biting foods, cutting foods etc. I will record the sounds separately on my phone to get a clear and crisps sound
Non dietic sound
I am intending to add non deigetic sound in later scenes in ACT1, in ACT 2 and perhaps in ACT3. my aim for my sound design is to mimic as if we are inside my protagonist head, hearing, seeing and feeling how she does.
For example,
the scene where my protagonist says "my nans favourite, if you eat fish you will become smart"
I have chosen to add a tv/ radio sound in the background as when I think of my nan, I think of radio sounds as she likes to listen to the news. I also chose to add this sound as it is near the climax/disruption, the sound of people speaking from the radio can also foreshadow the sounds of old wives tales and people in her head later on in the film.
I used this sound where the climax is (when she pours red dye into the fish bowl) I chose this song because of the upbeat and happy emotion, however, halfway through the scene, I will manipulate and edit the sound to sound creepy and mimicking a broken radio, this is to reflect the change in tone of the film, but also to mirror how the words are starting to impact my protagonist negatively. I will slow down the songs and add glitch sound which I will also slow down to create a more horrifying result.
The scene where my protagonist is straitening her hair, she will be saying "straight is beautiful" the camera will slowly pan down, a whisper sound will appear and increasingly become louder saying "curly is ugly", for this sound I used my dads voice and manipulated with the pitch changing effect to result in different pitches of those voices, I layered them on top of each other and increasingly increased the volume when the bread crust gets closer. My aim was to create a sound that was kind of demonic and supernatural, to link with the idea of whispers of the old wives tales, but also to mimic what sounds go on in my protagonists head
